Why do all male figure skaters wear those gold chains and pendants?

I don't always see crosses on them. I've seen the Chinese with luck charms on theirs. What's Evgeni or Johnny Weir wearing then?

They were actually talking about that during the pairs the other night... there was a comment about one of the Chinese men wearing his gold chain during skating, and it's because in Chinese culture gold is considered lucky/to bring good fortune, and the Chinese have long been superstitious. Therefore they wear the chains... My guess is either other cultures have similar beliefs, or they take a page from the Chinese book and wear them because, hey, what can it hurt?
