For decades I have been engaged in collecting crystals, semi precious stones and other minerals for my personal pleasure and satisfaction. Among the rough stones and mineral specimens I possess, from time to time I also like to obtain some gems embedded in nicely designed jewelry, provided that the gemstones themselves are of some visual or metaphysical value to me. Some time ago I purchased some green amethyst earrings, as I was surprised to see more and more of them being offered on the markets. This brings me to the color of amethyst that I would like to discuss in this article.
Amethyst is by definition of violet, purplish or blue-violet, that is, indigo color. It is a common fact in gemology or, if you like, mineralogy. We know that amethyst is nothing but quartz stone with some minute traces of iron, which alter its transparent appearance making it violet. On the other hand, every gemologist would tell you that green quartz is called prasiolite. This type of quartz is not as frequent as for instance smoky quartz, which is of darker shade, rose quartz which is of delicate rose color, or citrine which is yellow or brownish. Nevertheless, prasiolite is sometimes found in nature, for example in Brazil which is the most important source of different silica minerals.
The majority of the green amethysts offered today are most likely not genuine prasiolite. They are ordinary amethysts whose color has been changed to green using some sort of lab. techniques. Without going into much detail, it suffices to say that amethyst can be transformed to citrine and the other way around by thermal treatment. The same holds obviously for the green coloration.
Another frequent gemstone on the jewelry markets is the so called "pink amethyst". Pink or lavender amethyst is also very popular, but in this case I believe there is no artificial enhancing method involved. Simply, some rough stones are naturally colored with lighter shades, and some of them also approaching the pale lavender nuances, which make them almost look like rose quartz. This fact has been used to promote this other variation of amethyst.
I would not be surprised if there appeared another coloration of this wondrous stone. The technology of enhancing various gems in laboratory is rapidly changing, which makes it difficult to distinguish the real minerals from their synthetic or altered counterparts. Whenever you have the choice, though, go for the naturally colored amethyst stones.
