Gold Opal Ring
How to care for rubies and opals?
My aunt recently gave me a necklace pendant made from a ring of my grandmothers. It has both a ruby and an opal. Auntie told me that to care for the opal, I was to bathe is every so often in mineral oil or baby oil. However I cannot find anything saying that online. So is it true? Or will this hurt the opal? Or hurt the ruby or the gold?
Firstly do not keep your jewellery all bunched together in the bottom of a box as this can cause scratching. Rubies are no problem, just wash them in warm water with a little washing up liquid using a soft tooth brush, rinse in clear water and allow to dry.
DO NOT rub opals with any sort of oil. Some opals are slightly porous and the oil can get under the surface. With time the oil decomposes leaving a nasty brown stain which is impossible to remove so wrecking your stone. Again the best way to look after opals is the same as with rubies. Opals are soft so take extra care to avoid scratching.
