Once upon a time a pretty little girl left a department store as slow as a sloth, dragging her feet all the way out. Silver jewelry, whether if it is sterling silver or not, do tarnish when coming into contact with air, sulfur, direct sunlight, or dampness. One way of preventing this is to keep in an air tight plastic bag. But when it does start getting tarnished and when part of it starts blackening, there is real no reason for one to get panic. A piece of soft 100% cotton cloth or flannel cloth is best for cleaning your silver jewelry. A soft toothbrush can also be used for the purpose. Special cleaning cloth is available in the market. As silver is a very soft metal, one should be careful not to use a rough piece of cloth and one should also avoid rubbing it too hard or briskly. Rinsing it with a mild liquid detergent and warm water usually do the trick. After undertaking such washing it should be dried completely before storing back into the plastic bag. If the tarnishing is a little more serious, a silver paste cleaner or a silver spray polish may be required. These usually contains tarnish retardants that slower future tarnishing.
